Our client-side gurus divide structure, presentation, and interactivity into separate XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. Most web design firms will dump all the JavaScript and CSS into a deprecated HTML 4 file. Why care? Speed! Browsers parse XHTML fast in Standards Mode, but parse deprecated HTML slowly in Quirks Mode. Further, the separate CSS and JavaScript files are cached, thereby saving bandwidth. Finally, XHTML files are small and fast to download.
